In 2006 Edenvillage imported the first English Shepherds to the UK since they died out around 100 years ago. Thankfully the pilgrims had taken these fantastic dogs over to America and there the breed thrived. It is mostly unchanged even today, which is easy to see in pictures of Queen Victoria’s dogs, then known as farm collies, Roy, Fern and Noble.
The breed is energetic, intelligent and active; they're agile, courageous and loyal meaning they're perfect for a variety of roles. They respond quickly to commands and adapt to new situations with ease. They have a different herding style to the Border Collie favouring an upright position and loose eye over a low crouched position and hard stare. As well as being wonderful herding dogs they are fantastic guardians who will bark to announce visitors and strangers alike but step down when told by their owners.
Their intelligence and athleticism helps them succeed in many sports including flyball and agility, and their calm, loving personality lends itself to therapy and disability assistance work. Here in the UK we have dogs competing in flyball, agility and obedience as well as tackling search and rescue.
